Ingredients

  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 cup granulated sugar
  • 1 teaspoon baking powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1 large egg
  • 1/2 cup milk
  • 1/4 cup unsalted butter, melted
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1/2 cup apple cider
  • Vegetable oil, for frying
  • For the glaze: 1 cup powdered sugar, 2-3 tablespoons apple cider, 1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract

Instructions

  1. In a large bowl, whisk together flour, sugar, baking powder, cinnamon, nutmeg, and salt.
  2. In a separate bowl, whisk together egg, milk, melted butter, and vanilla extract.
  3. Add the wet ingredients to the dry ingredients and mix until just combined.
  4. Stir in the apple cider until the batter is smooth.
  5. Heat about 2-3 inches of vegetable oil in a large, heavy-bottomed pot or Dutch oven to 350°F (175°C).
  6. Using a donut cutter or two spoons, carefully drop dollops of batter into the hot oil, being careful not to overcrowd the pot.
  7. Fry for 2-3 minutes per side, until golden brown.
  8. Remove donuts with a slotted spoon and place on a wire rack set over a baking sheet to drain.
  9. While the donuts are still warm, whisk together powdered sugar, apple cider, and vanilla extract in a small bowl to make the glaze.
  10. Dip each donut into the glaze, or drizzle it over the top. Let the glaze set before serving.

Notes

  • For crispier donuts, fry them for an extra minute on each side.
  • You can add a pinch of ground cloves to the batter for extra spice.
  • Ensure the oil temperature remains consistent for even cooking.
