Description
A classic apple pie with a beautiful lattice crust, perfect for cozy holiday baking.
Ingredients
- 4 cups sliced apples (about 4-5 medium apples)
- 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
- 1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg
- 2 tablespoons all-purpose flour
- 1/2 cup granulated sugar
- 1/4 cup packed brown sugar
- 1 tablespoon lemon juice
- 1/2 cup (1 stick) cold unsalted butter, cut into cubes
- 1 recipe for double pie crust (enough for a 9-inch pie)
- 1 egg, beaten (for egg wash)
- 1 tablespoon coarse sugar (optional, for topping)
Instructions
- Preheat your oven to 400°F (200°C).
- In a large bowl, toss the sliced apples with cinnamon, nutmeg, flour, granulated sugar, brown sugar, and lemon juice.
- Line a 9-inch pie plate with one of the prepared pie crusts.
- Pour the apple filling into the crust.
- Dot the top of the filling with the cold butter cubes.
- Place the second pie crust over the filling. Trim and crimp the edges to seal.
- Cut vents in the top crust or create a lattice top.
- Brush the top crust with the beaten egg wash and sprinkle with coarse sugar, if desired.
- Bake for 20 minutes at 400°F (200°C).
- Reduce the oven temperature to 375°F (190°C) and continue baking for another 30-40 minutes, or until the crust is golden brown and the filling is bubbly.
- Let the pie cool for at least 2-3 hours before slicing and serving.
Notes
- Use a mix of apple varieties for a more complex flavor.
- Ensure butter is very cold for a flaky crust.
- Allow pie to cool completely to prevent a runny filling.
