Description

A hearty and flavorful split pea soup made with a ham bone, perfect for a comforting meal.


Ingredients

  • 1 pound dried green split peas, rinsed
  • 1 ham bone
  • 8 cups water
  • 2 cups chopped carrots
  • 1 cup chopped celery
  • 1 cup chopped onion
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 teaspoon dried thyme
  • salt and pepper to taste


Instructions

  1. Combine split peas, ham bone, and water in a large pot.
  2. Bring to a boil, then reduce heat and simmer for 1 hour.
  3. Remove ham bone and shred any meat. Discard bone.
  4. Add carrots, celery, onion, garlic, and thyme to the pot.
  5. Simmer for another 30-45 minutes, or until peas are tender.
  6. Stir in shredded ham meat.
  7. Season with salt and pepper to taste.

Notes

  • For a thicker soup, mash some of the peas against the side of the pot.
  • You can add other vegetables like potatoes or parsnips.
