Description
A hearty and flavorful split pea soup made with a ham bone, perfect for a comforting meal.
Ingredients
- 1 pound dried green split peas, rinsed
- 1 ham bone
- 8 cups water
- 2 cups chopped carrots
- 1 cup chopped celery
- 1 cup chopped onion
- 2 cloves garlic, minced
- 1 teaspoon dried thyme
- salt and pepper to taste
Instructions
- Combine split peas, ham bone, and water in a large pot.
- Bring to a boil, then reduce heat and simmer for 1 hour.
- Remove ham bone and shred any meat. Discard bone.
- Add carrots, celery, onion, garlic, and thyme to the pot.
- Simmer for another 30-45 minutes, or until peas are tender.
- Stir in shredded ham meat.
- Season with salt and pepper to taste.
Notes
- For a thicker soup, mash some of the peas against the side of the pot.
- You can add other vegetables like potatoes or parsnips.
- This soup freezes well.
