A savory and satisfying strata perfect for a special Christmas morning breakfast. This recipe combines layers of bread, eggs, cheese, and optional turkey bacon for a delicious start to your holiday.
Ingredients
- 8 cups cubed whole grain bread (about 1 pound)
- 1 pound turkey bacon, cooked and crumbled
- 2 cups shredded cheddar cheese
- 1 cup chopped onion
- 1/2 cup chopped green bell pepper
- 6 large eggs
- 3 cups milk
- 1 teaspoon salt
- 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
- 1/4 teaspoon garlic powder
- Fresh fruit salad, for serving
Instructions
- Grease a 9×13 inch baking dish.
- Spread the cubed bread evenly in the prepared baking dish.
- Sprinkle the crumbled turkey bacon, shredded cheddar cheese, chopped onion, and chopped green bell pepper over the bread.
- In a large bowl, whisk together the eggs, milk, salt, pepper, and garlic powder until well combined.
- Pour the egg mixture evenly over the bread mixture in the baking dish.
- Cover the dish with plastic wrap and refrigerate for at least 4 hours, or preferably overnight.
- Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C).
- Remove the plastic wrap and bake for 45-55 minutes, or until the strata is puffed up and golden brown.
- Let the strata rest for 5-10 minutes before slicing and serving.
- Serve warm with fresh fruit salad.
Notes
- For a vegetarian option, omit the turkey bacon and add sautéed mushrooms or spinach.
- You can use other types of cheese like Gruyere or Monterey Jack.
- If you don’t have whole grain bread, any sturdy bread will work.
