A savory and satisfying strata perfect for a special Christmas morning breakfast. This recipe combines layers of bread, eggs, cheese, and optional turkey bacon for a delicious start to your holiday.


Ingredients

  • 8 cups cubed whole grain bread (about 1 pound)
  • 1 pound turkey bacon, cooked and crumbled
  • 2 cups shredded cheddar cheese
  • 1 cup chopped onion
  • 1/2 cup chopped green bell pepper
  • 6 large eggs
  • 3 cups milk
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1/4 teaspoon garlic powder
  • Fresh fruit salad, for serving


Instructions

  1. Grease a 9×13 inch baking dish.
  2. Spread the cubed bread evenly in the prepared baking dish.
  3. Sprinkle the crumbled turkey bacon, shredded cheddar cheese, chopped onion, and chopped green bell pepper over the bread.
  4. In a large bowl, whisk together the eggs, milk, salt, pepper, and garlic powder until well combined.
  5. Pour the egg mixture evenly over the bread mixture in the baking dish.
  6. Cover the dish with plastic wrap and refrigerate for at least 4 hours, or preferably overnight.
  7. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C).
  8. Remove the plastic wrap and bake for 45-55 minutes, or until the strata is puffed up and golden brown.
  9. Let the strata rest for 5-10 minutes before slicing and serving.
  10. Serve warm with fresh fruit salad.

Notes

  • For a vegetarian option, omit the turkey bacon and add sautéed mushrooms or spinach.
  • You can use other types of cheese like Gruyere or Monterey Jack.
  • If you don’t have whole grain bread, any sturdy bread will work.
