Ingredients
- 1 pound elbow macaroni
- 1/2 cup butter
- 1/2 cup all-purpose flour
- 3 cups milk
- 1 teaspoon salt
- 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
- 4 cups shredded cheddar cheese
- 1 cup shredded Gruyere cheese
Instructions
- Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C). Grease a 9×13 inch baking dish.
- Cook the macaroni according to package directions until al dente. Drain well and set aside.
- In a large saucepan, melt the butter over medium heat. Whisk in the flour and cook for 1 minute, stirring constantly.
- Gradually whisk in the milk until smooth. Bring to a simmer, stirring constantly, until the sauce thickens.
- Remove from heat and stir in the salt, pepper, cheddar cheese, and Gruyere cheese until the cheese is melted and the sauce is smooth.
- Add the drained macaroni to the cheese sauce and stir to combine.
- Pour the mixture into the prepared baking dish.
- Bake for 20-25 minutes, or until bubbly and lightly browned on top.
- Let stand for 5 minutes before serving.
Notes
- For a crispier topping, you can add breadcrumbs mixed with melted butter over the mac and cheese before baking.
