Description
A simple and hearty Shepherd’s Pie, perfect for a comforting meal. This recipe features a savory ground beef filling topped with creamy mashed potatoes.
Ingredients
- 1 tbsp olive oil
- 1 lb ground beef
- 1 onion, chopped
- 2 carrots, chopped
- 2 celery stalks, chopped
- 2 cloves garlic, minced
- 1 cup beef broth
- 1 tbsp Worcestershire sauce
- 1 tsp dried thyme
- Salt and pepper to taste
- 2 lbs potatoes, peeled and quartered
- 1/2 cup milk
- 4 tbsp butter
- 1/4 cup shredded cheddar cheese (optional)
Instructions
- Preheat oven to 375°F (190°C).
- Heat olive oil in a large skillet over medium-high heat. Add ground beef and cook until browned, breaking it up with a spoon. Drain excess fat.
- Add onion, carrots, and celery to the skillet. Cook until softened, about 5-7 minutes.
- Stir in garlic and cook for 1 minute more until fragrant.
- Pour in beef broth and Worcestershire sauce. Bring to a simmer and cook for 5 minutes, allowing the sauce to thicken slightly.
- Stir in thyme, salt, and pepper. Set aside.
- While the filling is simmering, boil potatoes in a pot of salted water until tender, about 15-20 minutes.
- Drain potatoes and return them to the pot. Add milk and butter. Mash until smooth and creamy. Season with salt and pepper.
- Spread the meat filling evenly in a 9×13 inch baking dish.
- Top the filling with the mashed potatoes, spreading evenly. If using, sprinkle cheddar cheese over the top.
- Bake for 20-25 minutes, or until the top is golden brown and the filling is bubbly.
- Let stand for a few minutes before serving.
Notes
- For a healthier version, use lean ground turkey or chicken instead of beef.
- Add frozen peas or corn to the meat filling for extra vegetables.
- Serve with a side salad for a complete meal.
