Tender meatballs infused with classic French onion soup flavors, simmered in a rich, savory onion sauce. This dish is perfect for a comforting weeknight meal or an impressive dinner party.
Ingredients
- 1 pound ground beef
- 1/2 cup breadcrumbs
- 1/4 cup grated Parmesan cheese
- 1 egg
- 2 tablespoons chopped fresh parsley
- 1 teaspoon salt
- 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
- 2 tablespoons olive oil
- 2 large onions, thinly sliced
- 2 cloves garlic, minced
- 1/4 cup dry red wine
- 2 cups beef broth
- 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
- 1 teaspoon fresh thyme
- 1 tablespoon cornstarch (optional, for thickening)
- 2 tablespoons water (if using cornstarch)
Instructions
- Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C).
- In a large bowl, combine ground beef, breadcrumbs, Parmesan cheese, egg, parsley, salt, and pepper. Mix gently until just combined.
- Form the mixture into 1-inch meatballs.
- Heat olive oil in a large oven-safe skillet over medium heat. Add the sliced onions and cook until softened and lightly browned, about 8-10 minutes.
- Add the minced garlic and cook for 1 minute more until fragrant.
- Pour in the red wine and scrape up any browned bits from the bottom of the skillet. Let it simmer for 1-2 minutes until slightly reduced.
- Stir in the beef broth, Worcestershire sauce, and thyme. Bring to a simmer.
- Carefully place the meatballs into the simmering sauce.
- Transfer the skillet to the preheated oven. Bake for 20-25 minutes, or until the meatballs are cooked through and the sauce has thickened slightly.
- If you prefer a thicker sauce, whisk together cornstarch and water in a small bowl. Stir the mixture into the simmering sauce in the skillet and cook for another 1-2 minutes until thickened.
- Serve hot, spooning the savory onion sauce over the meatballs.
Notes
- For extra flavor, you can add a tablespoon of Dijon mustard to the meatball mixture.
- If you don’t have red wine, you can substitute it with an equal amount of beef broth or a splash of balsamic vinegar.
- Garnish with extra fresh parsley before serving.
