Description

A classic and comforting shepherd’s pie, perfect for a hearty holiday meal. This recipe features a rich ground beef filling topped with creamy mashed potatoes.

Ingredients

  • 1 lb ground beef
  • 1 onion, chopped
  • 2 carrots, diced
  • 1 cup frozen peas
  • 1 (14.5 ounce) can diced tomatoes, undrained
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
  • 2 pounds potatoes, peeled and cubed
  • 1/2 cup milk
  • 1/4 cup butter

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 375 degrees F (190 degrees C).
  2. In a large skillet, cook the ground beef and onion over medium heat until the beef is browned and the onion is softened. Drain off any excess grease.
  3. Stir in the diced tomatoes, carrots, peas, salt, and pepper. Bring to a simmer and cook for 10 minutes, stirring occasionally.
  4. While the beef mixture is simmering, boil the potatoes in salted water until tender, about 15-20 minutes. Drain the potatoes.
  5. Mash the potatoes with milk and butter until smooth. Season with salt and pepper to taste.
  6. Spread the beef mixture evenly in the bottom of a 9×13 inch baking dish.
  7. Top the beef mixture with the mashed potatoes, spreading evenly.
  8. Bake in the preheated oven for 20-25 minutes, or until the topping is golden brown and the filling is bubbly.

Notes

  • For an extra rich topping, you can add shredded cheese to the mashed potatoes.
  • You can substitute lamb for beef for a traditional shepherd’s pie.
