Ingredients
- 2 1/4 cups all-purpose flour
- 1 teaspoon baking soda
- 1/2 teaspoon salt
- 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
- 1/2 teaspoon ground ginger
- 1/4 teaspoon ground cardamom
- 1/8 teaspoon ground cloves
- 1/8 teaspoon black pepper
- 1 cup (2 sticks) unsalted butter, softened
- 1 1/2 cups granulated sugar
- 2 large eggs
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
- 1/4 cup milk
Instructions
- Whisk together flour, baking soda, salt, cinnamon, ginger, cardamom, cloves, and black pepper in a medium bowl.
- In a large bowl, cream together softened butter and granulated sugar until light and fluffy.
- Beat in eggs one at a time, then stir in vanilla extract.
- Gradually add the dry ingredients to the wet ingredients, alternating with the milk, beginning and ending with dry ingredients. Mix until just combined.
- Cover the dough and chill for at least 1 hour.
- Preheat oven to 375°F (190°C). Line baking sheets with parchment paper.
- Roll dough into 1-inch balls and place on prepared baking sheets, about 2 inches apart.
- Flatten each cookie slightly with the bottom of a glass or a fork.
- Bake for 8-10 minutes, or until edges are lightly golden.
- Let cookies cool on the baking sheets for a few minutes before transferring them to a wire rack to cool completely.
Notes
- For a stronger chai flavor, increase the amounts of cinnamon, ginger, cardamom, and cloves.
- You can add a pinch of cayenne pepper for a subtle kick.
