Description

Ingredients

  • 2 1/4 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground ginger
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground cardamom
  • 1/8 teaspoon ground cloves
  • 1/8 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1 cup (2 sticks) unsalted butter, softened
  • 1 1/2 cups granulated sugar
  • 2 large eggs
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1/4 cup milk


Instructions

  1. Whisk together flour, baking soda, salt, cinnamon, ginger, cardamom, cloves, and black pepper in a medium bowl.
  2. In a large bowl, cream together softened butter and granulated sugar until light and fluffy.
  3. Beat in eggs one at a time, then stir in vanilla extract.
  4. Gradually add the dry ingredients to the wet ingredients, alternating with the milk, beginning and ending with dry ingredients. Mix until just combined.
  5. Cover the dough and chill for at least 1 hour.
  6. Preheat oven to 375°F (190°C). Line baking sheets with parchment paper.
  7. Roll dough into 1-inch balls and place on prepared baking sheets, about 2 inches apart.
  8. Flatten each cookie slightly with the bottom of a glass or a fork.
  9. Bake for 8-10 minutes, or until edges are lightly golden.
  10. Let cookies cool on the baking sheets for a few minutes before transferring them to a wire rack to cool completely.

Notes

  • For a stronger chai flavor, increase the amounts of cinnamon, ginger, cardamom, and cloves.
  • You can add a pinch of cayenne pepper for a subtle kick.
