Classic Christmas sugar cookies with sweet icing, perfect for holiday decorating.
Ingredients
- 2 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
- 1 cup granulated sugar
- 1 cup unsalted butter, softened
- 1 large egg
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
- 1/2 teaspoon baking powder
- 1/4 teaspoon salt
- For the Icing:
- 2 cups powdered sugar
- 1/4 cup milk
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
- Food coloring (optional)
Instructions
- Cream together softened butter and sugar until light and fluffy.
- Beat in the egg and vanilla extract.
- In a separate bowl, whisk together flour, baking powder, and salt.
- Gradually add the dry ingredients to the wet ingredients, mixing until just combined.
- Divide the dough in half, flatten into discs, wrap in plastic wrap, and chill for at least 1 hour.
- Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Line baking sheets with parchment paper.
- On a lightly floured surface, roll out one disc of dough to about 1/4-inch thickness.
- Cut out desired Christmas shapes using cookie cutters.
- Place cookies on the prepared baking sheets, about 1 inch apart.
- Bake for 8-10 minutes, or until the edges are lightly golden.
- Let cookies cool on the baking sheets for a few minutes before transferring them to a wire rack to cool completely.
- To make the icing, whisk together powdered sugar, milk, and vanilla extract until smooth. Add food coloring if desired.
- Once cookies are completely cool, decorate with icing.
Notes
- Chill the dough for easier handling and cutting.
- Do not overmix the dough once the flour is added.
- Adjust icing consistency by adding more powdered sugar for thicker icing or more milk for thinner icing.
